Why is celebrity drug addiction such a hot topic for the media? Perhaps it’s because they love to see powerful icons crashing and burning when their lives take a turn for the worse. Still, not all celebs end up as permanent fixtures in the gossip columns – it is possible to come back from and overcome some of the worst addictions to drugs, alcohol, or both.

Addiction does not care if you are a famous celebrity; it affects all people equally. You’re not alone in your struggle to overcome drug or alcohol addiction. Recovery is possible.

  1. Robert Downey Jr.: Perhaps one of the most publicized addiction recovery cases is Robert Downey Jr.’s story of bouncing back from drug addiction. He had lost many acting roles and was written off by Hollywood until he finally overcame his addition to marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and various other drugs. Since then, he has been one of the highest paid, A-list, successful actors.
  2. Trent Reznor: Nine Inch Nails front man had a drug addiction that lead to a heroin overdose. When he finally realized that bad things kept following him and his addiction, he sought treatment in rehab and has been clean and drug free since 2001.
  3. Eminem: The rapper was once addicted to pain killers and other drugs. He finally went to drug rehab after friends convinced him that his drug use was a problem. Elton John had befriended him and convinced him to seek treatment after sharing his own celebrity addiction and recovery story.
  4. Ben Affleck: The famous and very successful actor owes his success to beating addiction. His drug use, alcoholism, and gambling addiction were all threatening his acting career. He realized that he needed help to quit and reached out to his friends when he checked himself into rehab for drug addiction treatment in 2001. Recently, it was reported that he visited Lindsey Lohan while she was in rehab in an effort to council her on staying sober after treatment.
  5. Drew Barrymore: Drew Barrymore was a child actor and that led her down the same path to drug abuse that so many other child actors travel down. At a very young age, she was addicted to cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. At age 14 she entered rehab and has been clean and sober ever since.
  6. Demi Lovato: The young singer and actress also battled with drug and alcohol addiction. She entered treatment for her addictions in 2010 and has since maintained her sobriety while also experiencing success in her career.
  7. Daniel Radcliffe: The Harry Potter star recently shared the news that he is clean and sober. Many did not know that he went through a private battle with alcoholism during the time he was filming the popular wizard movies. When he realized that his addiction was threatening his career and his life, he went through alcohol addiction treatment. He now realizes that he was trying to live up to a Hollywood stereotype and instead chooses to live his life without alcohol.
  8. Kelly Osborne:  The daughter of heavy metal’s Ozzy Osborne, who also has battled addiction, shows that persistence counts. She went through rehab 4 times before finally overcoming her addiction to drugs and pain killers in 2009.
  9. Brittany Spears: The pop singer went through a much-publicized melt down and the root of her problems was addiction to drugs and alcohol. In 2007, she checked herself into a rehab clinic and has since turned her life around and experienced a resurgence in her music career.
  10. Fergie:  The Black Eyed Peas singing beauty had a troubled past with drug abuse. Her drug use caused her to leave the group Wild Orchid and seek addiction treatment. After completing her rehab and getting clean, she joined the Black Eyed Peas in 2003 and the rest is a success story with hit albums, a marriage to actor Josh Duhamel and a new baby born in 2013.
